Some real estate closings mean a little more than simply handing over the keys.
Today, I had the privilege of watching Shelby Lay become a homeowner.
But Shelby's story with me didn't begin when she started looking for a house. It actually began several years ago — and with someone else in her family.
Several years ago, I had the opportunity to help Shelby's mom, Crystal Lay, with her own real estate journey.
Crystal had originally come into my world through another relationship. Her nephew, Cameron Bryant, was a friend and former colleague of mine from my Walmart days.
That connection eventually led Crystal to trust me with her real estate needs.
At the time, it was simply another opportunity to help someone I knew through my existing relationships. I certainly couldn't have known that years later, that same relationship would bring Crystal's daughter to me when she was ready to purchase a home of her own.
But that's exactly what happened.
When Shelby was ready to start looking, she came to me.
And for me, that's one of the greatest compliments you can receive in this business.
It's one thing for someone to trust you with their own home purchase or sale. It's something different when, years later, they trust you with their child.
Shelby's home search also happened during a pretty significant time in my own family's life.
My wife and I were expecting our second son, John-Luke, and naturally I had tried to plan my business around his expected arrival.
John-Luke apparently wasn't particularly interested in my schedule.
He decided to arrive early.
Suddenly, instead of following the normal plan I had envisioned for Shelby's home search, I needed to make sure she continued receiving the attention and service she deserved while I focused on my wife and newborn son.
And that's where Shannon Marshall became an important part of this story.
Shannon stepped in and continued working directly with Shelby, helping her through the search and eventually through the process of getting her new home under contract.
That's exactly what a team is supposed to do.
Real estate doesn't stop because something unexpected happens in an agent's personal life. Clients still have homes to see, questions that need answers, deadlines that have to be met, and decisions that need to be made.
Shelby didn't need excuses.
She needed someone there for her.
And Shannon was.
Eventually, Shelby found the one.
The road from an accepted offer to closing wasn't completely without its twists. An appraisal resulted in the purchase price being adjusted before closing, and there were still all of the normal moving pieces that come with getting a home purchase across the finish line.
But everyone kept moving forward.
And on August 28, 2026, Shelby closed on her new home for $205,000.
Keys in hand.
Homeowner.
There are a lot of ways to measure success in real estate.
You can count transactions.
You can count sales volume.
You can count commissions, listings, awards, leads, or closings.
Those numbers matter. This is a business, after all.
But I've spent a lot of time recently looking back over my real estate career, and I've realized that some of the most important things I've built can't really be seen on a sales report.
They're relationships.
One person introduces you to another.
You help someone buy a home.
Years pass.
Then their daughter calls.
That's how a real estate career starts becoming something much bigger than a collection of transactions.
Cameron was part of my life before real estate ever entered the picture.
That relationship eventually connected me with Crystal.
I had the opportunity to help Crystal.
And years later, Crystal's daughter Shelby trusted me — and ultimately my team — to help her become a homeowner too.
That's a lineage I never could have planned when I started selling real estate.
But I'm incredibly grateful for it.
Shelby, congratulations on your new home.
Thank you for trusting us to help you through this process, and thank you to Crystal for once again placing your family's trust in me.
And Shannon — thank you for stepping in when my family unexpectedly needed me somewhere else and making sure Shelby continued to be taken care of.
This one took a few people, a few unexpected turns, and relationships that stretch back years.
But today, it ended exactly where we wanted it to:
At the closing table, with Shelby becoming a homeowner.
Congratulations, Shelby. I hope this is only the beginning of many wonderful years and memories in your new home.
